Beschreibung
Antike Pfeffermühle um 1915
versilbert
hergestellt in schwerer Ausführung von
Christofle, Paris
bodenseitig punziert
stammt aus dem 1st-class-Service eines
Luxus-Passagierdampfers der
Hamburg-Amerika-Linie (H.A.P.A.G.)
Reederei-Logo befindet sich vorderseitig
in der Mitte der Pfeffermühle
Maße:
Höhe ca. 9 cm
∅ Sockel ca. 5 cm
Gewicht ca. 234 g
Die Pfeffermühle steht auf einem runden,
gestuften Sockel. Darüber erhebt sich der
gerade, zylindrische Korpus, der oberhalb
und unterhalb jeweils von einem feinen,
umlaufenden gedrehten Banddekor ge-
gliedert wird. Dieses Dekor wiederholt sich
am Außenrand der Abdeckung sowie am
mittig erhöhten Knauf.
Die Befüllung erfolgt von oben: Deckel und
Knauf werden hierzu abgeschraubt, an-
schließend kann der Pfeffer eingefüllt
werden.
Das Mahlwerk von Peugeot Frères ist
voll funktionsfähig.
Mit ihren rund 110 Jahren weist die Mühle
deutliche und authentische Gebrauchsspuren
auf. Vorhanden sind unter anderem Putz-
spuren, Kratzer und stellenweiser Silberabrieb.
Diese Spuren sind Teil ihrer Geschichte und
verleihen dem Stück eine schöne, gewachsene
Alterspatina.
Albert Ballin, der damalige Generaldirektor
der HAPAG und als Wegbereiter der
modernen Kreuzfahrt bekannt, holte für die
Einrichtung und Ausstattung der à-la-carte-
Restaurants an Bord seiner luxuriösen Passa-
gierdampfer den berühmten Hotelier César
Ritz, Gründer und Namensgeber der legen-
dären RITZ-Hotels. Für die hochwertige
Geschirrausstattung der Restaurants beauf-
tragte Ritz schließlich die renommierte
Pariser Silberschmiede Christofle – hatte er
doch bereits seine eigenen Luxushotels mit
deren exquisitem Silber und Tafelgeschirr
ausgestattet.

Antique Pepper Mill, circa 1915
Silver-plated
Made in a heavy, substantial quality by
Christofle, Paris
with a hallmark to the underside.
Originally part of the first-class service
aboard a luxury passenger liner operated
by the
Hamburg-Amerika Linie (HAPAG).
The shipping line’s emblem is prominently
displayed at the center of the front of the
pepper mill.
Dimensions:
Height: approx. 3.54 in.
Diameter of base: approx. 1.97 in.
Weight: approx. 8.25 oz.
The pepper mill stands on a round, stepped
base. Rising above it is a straight, cylindrical
body, articulated at both the upper and lower
sections by a fine, continuous twisted-band
decoration. The same decorative motif is re-
peated around the outer edge of the cover
and on the raised central knob.
The mill is filled from the top: the cover and
knob are unscrewed for filling, after which
the pepper can be added.
The Peugeot Frères grinding mechanism
is fully functional.
At approximately 110 years old, the mill
displays clear and authentic signs of use.
These include cleaning marks, scratches, and
areas of silver wear. Such traces form part of
the object’s history and lend it an attractive,
naturally developed patina consistent with its
age.
Albert Ballin, the then General Director of
HAPAG and widely regarded as a pioneer of
modern cruising, engaged the renowned
hotelier César Ritz, founder and namesake
of the legendary Ritz hotels, to oversee the
interior design and outfitting of the à-la-carte
restaurants aboard his luxurious passenger
liners.
For the restaurants’ high-quality tableware
and service equipment, Ritz commissioned
the prestigious Parisian silversmith Christofle—
having already furnished his own luxury
hotels with the company’s exquisite silver-
ware and table services.
