Der Kühler steht auf einem runden Sockel.
Darüber erhebt sich ein gerader Korpus, der
an der Öffnung mit einem umlaufenden
Bördel im KreuzbandDekor auf fünffachem
Faden abschließt. Beidseitig oben angesetzte
kurze Handhaben in rechteckiger Form,
seitlich eingerollt und jeweils mit einem
Blattmotiv abgeschlossen. Bei der vorder-
seitigen ovalen Kartusche mit der Aufschrift:
„GRANDS MAGASINS DU PRINTEMPS“
wiederholt sich das klassische Kreuzband-
Dekor.
Die Gestaltung des Kühlers lässt sich
stilistisch in die von Christofle ab 1907 ge-
führte Dekorfamilie „Rubans“ einordnen.
Christofle selbst beschreibt das 1907 einge-
führte Modell als Louis-XVI-inspiriert und
charakterisiert es durch rhythmisch ange-
ordnete, gekreuzte Bänder und Schleifen –
genau jene ornamentale Sprache, die auch
diesen Kühler prägt.

Mit einer Höhe von nur ca. 17 cm
ist der Kühler deutlich niedriger als die
heute geläufigen Champagnerkühler.
Seine gerade Form und die massive
Konstruktion sprechen für einen histo-
rischen Eis- bzw. Getränkekühler, wie sie
Christofle in unterschiedlichen Größen
für den Tafel- und Gastronomiegebrauch
anbot.

Antiker gebrauchter Zustand mit normalen
alters- und verwendungsbedingten Ge-
brauchsspuren in Form von Putzspuren,
Kratzern, die ein über einhundert Jahre
alter, professionell genutzter Kühler gern
haben darf. Die originale, qualitätsvolle
Versilberung ist innen wie außen sehr
gut erhalten.

Die Verbindung zu den berühmten Pariser
Grands Magasins du Printemps ist
besonders reizvoll. Das 1865 von Jules
Jaluzot und Jean-Alfred Duclos gegründete
Warenhaus am Boulevard Haussmann
entwickelte sich um die Jahrhundertwende
zu einem der bedeutendsten Pariser Luxus-
und Warenhäuser.

Exceptionally Heavy Champagne /

the underside.

Made for the renowned Parisian
Art Nouveau department store
Grands Magasins du Printemps.
The store’s emblem is prominently
positioned in the center of the cooler.

The cooler stands on a round pedestal.
Above it rises a straight-sided body,
terminating at the opening in a rolled
rim decorated with a continuous crossed-
ribbon motif on a five-strand molding.
Short rectangular handles are attached
near the upper sides, with rolled ends
and each terminating in a foliate motif.
The oval cartouche on the front bears
the inscription “GRANDS MAGASINS
DU PRINTEMPS” and repeats the clas-
sical crossed-ribbon decoration.

Stylistically, the design of the cooler can
be attributed to the “Rubans” pattern
family introduced by Christofle from
1907 onward. Christofle itself described
the model, introduced in 1907, as in-
spired by the Louis XVI style and
characterized by rhythmically arranged
crossed ribbons and bows — precisely
the ornamental vocabulary that defines
this cooler.

With a height of only c. 6.7 inches,
the cooler is considerably lower than the
champagne coolers commonly en-
countered today. Its straight-sided form
and substantial construction suggest that
it was originally intended as a historic
ice or beverage cooler, of the type offered
by Christofle in various sizes for table
and professional catering use.

Antique condition, previously used, with
normal age- and use-related signs of wear,
including polishing marks and scratches
consistent with what one would expect
from a more than 100-year-old cooler
that was used professionally.
The original, high-quality silver plating
is very well preserved both inside and out.

The connection with the famous Parisian
Grands Magasins du Printemps is
particularly appealing. Founded in 1865
by Jules Jaluzot and Jean-Alfred Duclos,
the department store on Boulevard
Haussmann developed around the turn
of the century into one of Paris’s most
important luxury department stores.
