versilbert

bodenseitig punziert

Provenienz:

reich auszukurieren.
in Cap Ferrat 1934 an Tuberkulose ver-
storben war, wurde die Bar im
„Hotel du Cap Ferrat“ nach ihm benannt:
W. Somerset Maugham-Pianobar.

Design and Form
This creamer is distinguished by its har-
monious, flowing shape. A narrow,
circular foot transitions into a generously
rounded body, which initially tapers towards
the top before gently widening again towards
the opening.

The rimless spout, which curves slightly out-
wards, is complemented by a generously
proportioned, subtly raised pouring lip that
flows organically from the vessel’s silhouette.
On the opposite side, the slender, curved
handle is attached to the upper section of the
body. All elements blend seamlessly into one
another, without sharp edges or abrupt
transitions, giving the creamer an exceptionally
balanced, fluid and elegant silhouette.

This creamer belongs to the „Albi“ collection,
designed by Christofle in the 1960s and still in
production today.

The collection is characterised by its clean,
timeless design, inspired by the Sainte-
Cécile
Cathedral in the French city of
Albi
, located between Toulouse and Bordeaux.

Here, the emphasis is firmly on
form, material and craftsmanship.

Condition
In very good, well-maintained condition,
with minor signs of age and use, including
delicate polishing marks.
The original, high-quality silver plating is
exceptionally well preserved.

The Grand Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat opened
its doors in February 1908.
The celebrated British writer
William Somerset Maugham contracted
pulmonary tuberculosis around 1900 and
sought to recover in the south of France.
From the opening of the Grand Hôtel du
Cap-Ferrat onwards, he frequently stayed
there for several months at a time, drawn
by the exceptional care provided by the
hotel staff and the unique climate of the
French Riviera. Following the writer’s death
from tuberculosis at his home in Cap-Ferrat
in December 1934, the hotel’s bar was named
in his honour:
the W. Somerset Maugham Piano Bar
